    Start in the capital: the Khast Imam complex and its famous early Qurʼan, Chorsu Bazaar, and an evening ride on the metro. Amir Temur Square and the Museum of Applied Arts fill the second day.

    Samarkand

    Nights: 3

    Three days for the Registan, Shah-i-Zinda, Gur-e Amir and Bibi-Khanym. Save a morning for Ulugh Beg’s observatory and the Siyob bazaar, and one evening for the Registan lit up.

    Bukhara

    Nights: 2

    The old town is best on foot: Lyab-i Hauz, the Poi Kalyan, the Ark and the old trading domes. End the day with tea by the pool as the madrasahs turn gold.

    Inside the walls of Itchan Kala every street is a museum. Climb the Islam Khoja minaret for the view, and watch the sunset from the western wall.

    Fly from Urgench, half an hour from Khiva, back to the capital for the journey home.
