Najm al-Din Kubra
The shaykh who made saints
Founder of the Kubrawiya Sufi order in Khorezm. In 1221 he refused to flee and was killed defending Gurganj (Urgench) against the Mongol army.
Key achievements
- Founded the Kubrawiya Sufi order, which spread from Khorezm to Iran, Kashmir and China
- Described the lights and colours seen in meditation in Fawa'ih al-jamal
- Trained a generation of disciples who became famous masters in their own right
